What is the KVK?
The Kamer van Koophandel (KVK) is the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and official business register. Registration is mandatory for anyone conducting business in the Netherlands. Without a KVK number, you cannot issue legal invoices or open a business bank account.
Who Can Register?
Anyone with legal residence in the Netherlands can register: EU citizens, residence permit holders, and status holders (refugees with residence permits). Always check if your residence permit allows self-employment with the IND.
Legal Structures
Eenmanszaak (Sole Proprietorship): Simplest structure. No minimum capital. You are personally liable for debts.
BV (Private Limited Company): Minimum โฌ0.01 capital. Limited liability. Suitable when revenue exceeds โฌ100,000/year.
Registration Steps
1. Prepare your business name and check availability at kvk.nl/zoeken
2. Book an appointment at kvk.nl โ cost โฌ75.50
3. Bring: valid ID, Dutch address proof, residence permit if applicable
4. After registration, you automatically receive a VAT number from the tax authority
